Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp held each summer at Grand Valley State University. It is a five-day week of sports opportunities for youths aged seven to eighteen with various physical disabilities.

---The University of Wisconsin Whitewater Wheelchair Basketball Camp

The UW-Whitewater Junior Warhawk Wheelchair Basketball Camp is in its eleventh year of providing quality instruction, focusing exclusively on developing basketball skills. Athletes planning on attending this camp should be extremely independent and have a strong interest in competitive basketball. Athletes will participate in a variety of stations focusing on both individual and team concepts, and will be instructed by some of the best wheelchair basketball players in the world. Campers should be prepared for at least seven hours of basketball per day and able to take care of themselves in a university setting. Participation will be limited to 75 athletes.
Boys and girls, ages 8–18, who have a mobility impairment as their primary disability, are eligible to attend. All levels of mobility are encouraged. Individuals should have a willingness and ability to try several sports using adaptive equipment and rules. Our prerequisite is a good mental attitude.

---The University of Illinois Wheelchair Basketball Camps

Youth who are interested in improving their wheelchair basketball knowledge and skills should attend these camps. Elite Camp participants will be selected from coach recommendations. The Elite Camp check in will be July 28 from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. CST. Instruction starts on the evening of the 28th. Check in and registration for Individual Camp is July 14 from 12:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. CST. Instruction begins the evening of July 14th. Departure for Individual Camp is 8:00a.m. July 18. Check in for Team Camp is 1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. on July 18. Check out for Team Camp is 8:00a.m. on July 21. Contact your coach for information regarding attending Team Camp with your team.
Sports camps are open to males and females ages 13-19 for the basketball camps who have a lower extremity physical disability. The camps are physically demanding and rigorous, with an average of 8 to 9 hours of sport-specific training each day. Arriving at camp in proper physical condition is a must.

---University of Alabama Wheelchair Basketball Camps

The University of Alabama will host two concurrent wheelchair basketball camps on June 19 - 23, 2008.

One camp is for males age 12-19 and the other is for females age 12-19. Each camp will have a separate staff of instructors, curriculum, and housing arrangements. The two camps will share meals and selected activities.

Alabama Girls Wheelchair Basketball Camp is for girls age 12-19 and will provide a curriculum for campers with a strong emphasis high level wheelchair basketball instruction. Campers planning to attend this camp should be extremely independent, and have a strong interest in competitive wheelchair basketball. Supplementary activities will include water skiing, a pool party, and bowling tournament. Staff for this camp will include the Alabama Head Coach Margaret Stran, Assistant coach Stephanie Wheeler and other top U.S.A. and Canadian National Team players.

Alabama Boys Wheelchair Basketball Camp is for boys age 12-19 and will also focus on wheelchair basketball at a high level of competition. Campers attending the boy’s camp should also be independent and ready to participate in strenuous instructional sessions up to 7 hours per day. The staff for the boy’s camp will include Alabama Head Men’s Coach, Miles Thompson, Assistant Coach Jake Counts and other players from the Alabama and U.S. National Men’s team.

How Do I Register? To register for camp simply visit the University of Alabama Wheelchair Athletics website at www.uads.ua.edu
Click on the “Sports Camps” tab, print out a registration form and mail it in with your tuition.

Travel plans should be made that campers can be on campus at Alabama by 3:00 PM on Thursday, June 19th. Campers should plan to depart at 1:00 PM Monday, June 23. Flights should be made into the Birmingham airport to arrive no later than the 1:00 PM shuttle on June 19th and no earlier than the 1:00 PM shuttle on June 23th.

Cost for the University of Alabama Wheelchair Basketball boys and girls camp is $400 for all campers. These fees include room, board, instructional costs, camp t-shirts, and administrative costs. Make checks payable to University of Alabama Disability Sports.

Housing for both camps will be in separate sections of the new Riverside Dormitory Complex on the University of Alabama Campus. Rooms, restrooms, and shower facilities are all accessible.

Packing lists will be sent to participants about 2 or 3 weeks before camps that will have detailed instructions about what to bring and where to report.
